European Slave Trading in the Indian Ocean, 1500-1800

Research output: Contribution to journalBook/Film/Article reviewpeer-review

Abstract

Divided into six chapters, with four appendices and 20 illustrations, this huge historical effort is the result of Richard B. Allen’s 40 years of passionate research, true curiosity, and serious approach to such an essential topic as the slave trade and its relationship with the Indian Ocean and with Europe. The importance of this field of studies has finally been recognized: the new Indian Ocean Studies Series, established by G. Berchowitz of Ohio University Press, represents a strong move towards new studies on people with no voice, of new inter- and intra-disciplinary reconstructions and interpretations of a still under-researched area.
