Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] Since 11 September 2001 the Islamic religion has assumed mostly negative connotations: violence, terrorism, misogyny, fundamentalism. On the contrary, Islam is much more. This text aims to clarify the ethical aspects in reference both to the five pillars (profession of faith, prayer, almsgiving, fasting, pilgrimage in the holy places) and to the doctrine, and to the historical-theological peculiarities, which reveal Islam to us for what has been in its over one thousand four hundred years of history. An analysis that traces the formative centuries of a religion that in the West is supposed to know, without having an adequate awareness of it.
