This essay underlines the cultural roots of the entrepreneurial experience of Enrico Mattei throughout the crucial moment of national and international development after the Second World War. The paper refers to two recent publications resulting from the collaboration of Eni and Catholic University and highlights the synergy that existed between the atheneum and the big company created by Mattei that was nourished from the scientific elaboration developed in the Catholic University between the Thirties and the Fifties. That reflection cooperated to the formation of Eni’s corporate culture and helped in defining the peculiar role of Eni in the Italian development and in other emerging areas of the planet. The essay refers to the orientation that lead Eni’s “foreign policy” in Middle East, Africa and Soviet Union, especially considering the perspective of the valorial heritage that inspired the company.
