Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] Thomas Mann states that Nietzsche also has another name: illness. Indeed, looking at the life of the Röcken philosopher, it is impossible not to come across his pathology: beyond the delirious madness that marks his last decade, his entire existence appears indelibly marked by illness. And in Nietzsche, the autobiographical theme of illness is inseparable from the philosophical problem of suffering. Based on his experience as an eternal patient, Nietzsche wants to see how far he can resist thought and what direction it takes when subjected to the pressure of evil. His poignant reflections show how the negative cannot be eradicated from existence, much less justified, but is a necessary ingredient of it: without tears, man would miss out on too much joy and would never laugh.
