Abstract
Considering the fact that many students around the world often do not have many chances to engage in intercultural communication with people from different countries, telecollaboration and virtual exchange projects represent valuable opportunities to foster and facilitate communication among people with different cultural backgrounds. The paper provides a qualitative meta-synthesis of the research papers focusing on language and intercultural learning through telecollaboration projects published between 2010 and 2015. After identifying general trends and perceptions, the paper presents key issues and recurring patterns. They are organized under five main areas: participants’ telecollaboration experiences, telecollaboration and language learning, intercultural learning through telecollaboration, challenges faced by participants and the needs for effective practices. Finally, the paper offers some directions for future research and practice.
