Economia e istituzioni nelle procedure di soppressione e ripristino del monastero di Santa Grata in Columnellis di Bergamo (1798-1817)

this paper reconstructs and analyzes the suppression and restoration of the Benedictine monastery of Santa Grata in Columnellis of Bergamo. Between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the Napoleonic Italian states engaged in a vast policy of suppression of religious orders which led to the expropriation of all the assets of the nuns of Città Alta. the Benedictines were forced to abandon their centuries-old home, negotiate with various government authorities, and take on a huge financial commitment to repurchase the premises of their monastery. Reconstructing the events that surrounded these nuns between the Napoleonic era and the Restoration period enable us to provide a cross-section of the economic, financial, and institutional problems that religious orders and other ecclesiastical bodies had to face in this delicate phase of their history.
