Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] Household consumption patterns and behaviors have important consequences on the stock of natural resources and on the quality of the environment. From the OECD Green Growth Strategy project (www.oecd.org/greengrowth) we have taken a fundamental lesson on how important it is to take the "demand side" into consideration. The governments of the OECD countries have introduced a wide variety of measures to encourage users to take into account the environmental impact of their purchases and habits. However, the consequences of these policy measures on family decision-making are not always clear. In order to resolve this issue, a survey was carried out involving 10,000 families from the OECD countries. The present study has examined five fields: domestic water consumption, domestic energy consumption, choice of personal transport, consumption of organic food, production and recycling of waste. The analysis of the responses provided indications on the market as well as on the demographic and political factors that really affect the behavior and consumption patterns of users.
