Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The cosmos, the Big Bang, a creationist god, chance or the most neglected chaos. What is in the universe before the birth of everything? How was everything created? Or how was it created? These are the questions that Primo Levi, in his work as a chemist-writer, tried to answer: not just one, but several, trying to understand how, when and where what we call "universe" was born. in a galactic journey from the farthest star to the smallest subatomic nucleus, in his pages Levi tells, explains and imagines the functioning of the universe, from beginning to end, from the primordial Chaos to the Kosmos that man, in two thousand years of scientific evolution, establishes in it in an attempt to thin out an otherwise decisive disorder. But his conquest is only apparent: like the primordial asperity, like the matter-Mater and at the same time stepmother and like the dark colossi of black holes, the universe is not made for man, it reveals itself to be ever more intricate, unexpected, violent and strange. As Levi himself writes, «its mystery grows instead of diminishing, every discovery, every answer to old questions, gives birth to myriads of new questions». Presenting the cultural melting pot in which Levi mixes his cultures, this work intends to probe the way in which, by creating bridges between religion, science and literature, thanks to the ordering power of writing the chemist-writer creates zones of order to at least partially stem the disorder that threatens life, asking himself the questions that for centuries have gripped the rouseau pensant that is man: «who are we, where do we come from, where are we going?».
