Abstract
The microcanonical dynamics of an ensemble of random magnetic dipoles in a needle has been investigated. Due to the presence of a constant of motion in the 1D case, a ‘dimensional’ phase transition in the quasi one-dimensional case has been found separating a paramagnetic chaotic phase from a
ferromagnetic regular one. In particular, a simple criterion for the transition has been formulated and an intensive critical parameter found. Numerical simulations support our understanding of this complex phenomenon.
