Abstract
The article intends to show how much it is possible to obtain from the Borromeo
Archives of Isola Bella (ABIB), recently opened to the public of scholars, even with
a short visit intended for research on the medieval Vercelli society. A series of parchments concerning possessions in Vercelli area of the Abbey of St. Stefano di Vercelli - of which Federico Borromeo, cardinal and archbishop of Milan, was abbot commendatory - emerged from the fonds “Corporazioni religiose”. Two papal bulls are
published: one by Paolo III Farnese, dated 1547, to the abbot of St. Andrea to oblige
the vassals of the Church to request reconfirmation of the feuds that Pietro Francesco
Ferrero, bishop of Vercelli, had been claiming since years. The second bull, dated
1586, is by Sixtus V. It is very ruined and concerns the Milan cleric Federico
Borromeo, to whom men who were not fearful of God had revoked the enjoyment of
lands belonging to one of his abbeys, whose name remains unknown for a failure of
the parchment. Finally, a sentence signed by the bishop of Vercelli Guala Bondoni,
concerning the almost unknown nun’s monastery of Santa Maria di Settime, near
Desana, is reported.
