Abstract

Based on the established tradition of studies on the relationship between Goethe and Manzoni and, more generally, between Manzoni and European culture, the contribution is proposed to add an further piece to the mosaic of dense intertextuality of Il conte di Carmagnola: direct and indirect relations between the two authors and some significant textual references would consider the Egmont of Goethe as a source of inspiration to be added to the reference models of the first tragedy of Manzoni. The hypothesis, already advanced by eminent critics, is here supported by more specific textual evidence. Its verification also adds new elements to the subject on knowledge of German by the Lombard poet.
