Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] Addressing the issue of secularization with reference to the Islamic faith first of all poses a methodological problem: that of transposing a concept historically associated with the European cultural background in an Arab-Islamic world that, although influenced by the West during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries , maintains its own peculiarities, rooted in twelve centuries of antecedent history. There is no doubt that the risk of simplifying a reality, or worse, attributing to Islam characteristics not pertinent to its actual evolution, induces any researcher to be cautious, in order not to increase the confusion on such a relevant issue.
