Abstract

Procedings of Settimana Internazionale della Mendola. Over the centuries, wars, epidemics and major social, political and religious upheavals have marked so many caesuras, points of no return that indelibly influenced subsequent history. subsequent history. The apocalypse, or rather apocalypses, as definitive and catastrophic events, are also also etymologically linked to the dimension of unveiling. The medieval West offers many perspectives to analyse the reaction of individuals and institutions in the face of these shocks, which from time to time time tested societies, revealing precisely their essential characteristics. It is then necessary to look at the instruments put in place for managing the phases following the shocks, both on the civil-political side and on that of the galaxy of religious institutions in the 10th-14th centuries. In this volume, internationally renowned historians and young researchers consider this issue in the light of some significant indicators: the shock as an accelerator of innovation, the restructuring of institutional apparatuses, oligarchic closures or enlargement of institutional actors, the social mobility before and after the shock, representing the shock in order to design the future, making memory of it, rethinking and resemantizing space, giving a meaning to the shock in order to start again. And again: the ritualisation of overcoming the shock, individual and collective emotions and moods during and after shocks, explaining the crisis to legitimise the change, tools for overcoming shock and the crisis as an opportunity.
