Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The expectation of a child represents an important biographical event that starts a process of evolution and human signification. In addition to the affective dimension, becoming a mother implies a complex of intimate, relational, organizational and professional transformations which must be faced. The time of waiting is a time for the relationship. The wait at the same time indicates the act of waiting, of carefully guarding, "of striving for", of keeping a promise, while in its intransitive form it means dedicating oneself to someone with commitment, "waiting for" someone. It is a question of giving life to a space (physical, psychic, affective) that can welcome the other, putting into practice a fruitful and generative process. Waiting, in order not to fall into expectation, must promote the ability to open up to the new, must be surprised by the other; indicates the suspension of action to welcome the other into oneself and allow oneself to be changed by this relationship. When, on the other hand, waiting turns into expectation, the empty space destined to welcome the other is saturated and the relationship becomes instrumental and tends to conform the other to the desire of those who expect something. Waiting is paid attention and becomes generative when it knows how to make space for the other, in this sense it requires a work of "emptying", it is about making room for a new life to be accepted. Conception and pregnancy start a silent revolution in the mother. The transition to parenthood requires a willingness to change and a transformation of one's role and tasks to accommodate that process which, while preparing the birth of the child, creates the conditions for a mother to be born as well. Pregnancy thus constitutes a profound maturational "crisis", it is an irreversible turning point in a woman's life cycle. The birth of a child asks the mother to find new emotional and relational balances. Even before the child is conceived and born, he exists in the imagination of a desire, which only later becomes a project.
