Abstract
The contribution illustrates the concept of digital disconnection understood as a set of social practices aimed at the deliberate renunciation, temporary or definitive, generalised or selective, occasional or periodic, for long or short periods, of connection to specific digital technologies. After describing the main approaches, initially oriented towards digital detox, digital well-being and media resistance, the chapter reports on the different disciplines that have fuelled research on the topic. In conclusion, the main lines of the theoretical debate are traced, up to proposing a non-dichotomous reading of DD, which tackles the complexity of the phenomenon by highlighting tensions, ambivalences and dilemmas to which users are subjected in their daily management of being online and offline.
