Abstract

The ancient sources have an univocal opinion about the Theban hegemony: it has been built not on a solid political and cultural tradition, but on a close connection with charismatic figures like Pelopidas and Epaminondas. Diodorus’ account of the Theban hegemony (book XV) agrees with this point of view; in particular, the destruction of the city of Orchomenos shows the very difficult relationship between Epaminondas and the other governing, as results on the base of XV 57, 1 and XV 79, 3-6.
