Abstract

This contribution inquires the very nature of dialogue as a component of texts. Some contemporary models consider dialogue as particular kind of utterance beside argumentative, descriptive, expository and narrative ones. Nonetheless historical, theoretical and applied linguistic evidences seem to be consistent with a different hypothesis, i.e. dialogue (or reported speech) is one of the possible forms of utterance, regardless the role (argumentative, descriptive, expository and narrative) the dialogical utterance plays in a text.
