Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] Online hate speech (in an "onlife" perspective) questions various disciplinary fields, including pedagogical ones and in particular the educational reflections connected to the transformations of online communication and sociality. The speech reports a case study, carried out within the Mediavox Observatory on online hate of the Catholic University, on Islamophobic hate speech in Italian on social networks in 2019-2020. The corpus, made up of tweets selected by keywords, was investigated in terms of the amount of hatred for each month, rhetoric used and forms of Islamophobia. The analysis is carried out through social network analysis (SNA) techniques, combining the socio-educational approach and automatic computer processing with the aim of understanding whether it is possible to automate the process of identifying Islamophobic hatred. As for the forms of Islamophobia, which lack a shared classification at the level of scientific literature, they were drawn from a previous participatory analysis work with the most important Italian Muslim youth association (GMI), whose members shared the research online, reports and discussion of hate cases first among the children themselves and then with university researchers. The intervention will focus in the first part on the methodology and results of the research. In the second, the reflections drawn from these data will be presented, in particular with respect to: a) the need for an in-depth knowledge of the phenomenon at the center of the research and the effort of defining hatred online (Islamophobic) in order to plan adequate educational interventions; b) the need to integrate the automatic classification phase with the manual contribution to the research level; c) the need to hybridize media education and intercultural pedagogy in the perspective of citizenship education.
