Abstract

Franciacorta is known today above all for the production of the wine of the same name; the essay illustrates the medieval origins of local viticulture, with particular regard to the contribution made by ecclesiastical and monastic institutions to the development of vines in the Brescia hilly area between Mella and Oglio. Among the fermented wines, the production of “cisiolo”, a sparkling white wine, which is at the center of the medical-dietetic treatise “Libellus de vino mordaci” by Girolamo Conforti, deserves to be mentioned.
