Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] From the 1880s to 1914, on the western shores of Lake Garda, which belonged to the Italian province of Brescia, developed "lively German life". This is what the first edition of the messenger from Lake Garda, a German newspaper, published from 1900 to 1914, first in Maderno, then in Salò. The lake had become a popular destination for guests from the Wilheminian and the Habsburg Empire. The messenger contained practical information, news about local life, but also many articles about Italian politics and economics, geography and culture, because he wanted to be a "window on Italy" for German-speaking guests. Germany and Austria's domestic policy was not an issue, but Italy's Allies in the Triple Alliance were mentioned in the articles that contemplated Italy's foreign policy and discussed irredentism, the Balkan question, and the thorny issues of international relations at that time. The messenger did not take a radical, nationalist position on these issues, on the contrary, for a peaceful, multicultural coexistence both in the small space of the Brescian Riviera and in the great European area.
