Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] From 1900 to 1914 the periodical in German "Der Bote vom Gardasee" was published on Lake Garda, first in Maderno and starting in 1903 in Salò. Born as a tool to promote the Riviera as a place of care and residence and to provide visitors who spent time on the lake with practical information, the weekly informed German guests about the political, economic, social and cultural transformations of Italy in the early twentieth century. For this reason, despite its limited range, "Der Bote vom Gardasee" is an interesting document of a little-known chapter of the centuries-old history of Italo-German cultural relations. Thanks to its pages it is possible to reconstruct not only the image of the Italy they conveyed, but also the story of an intense, albeit brief, intercultural experience that saw among its protagonists known and less known representatives of the then Wilhelminian Empire, from Paul Heyse to Otto Erich Hartleben, from King George of Saxony to Rosa Luxemburg, not to mention the editors of the newspaper, Ottomar Piltz who was also the founder and Martin Birnbaum. The contributions of which the volume is composed propose a first reconnaissance from four different points of view of the immense material offered by a document so far forgotten, but which should be recovered and enhanced to add a further piece to the history of the journey in Italy.
