Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] In the seventeenth century a travelogue and a tourist guide often came to coincide. Each traveler usually kept a diary, which on one side it was used to inform parents of the good progress of the trip, when young aristocrats in training were traveling, on the other hand then between friends and relatives and in turn acted as a guide for those who left later. An example of the close link between these two textual genres is the handwritten travelogue of Christian August, Count Palatine of Sulzbach, who traveled to Italy in 1642-1643 with his brother Johann Ludwig. The traveler does not intend to record his personal impressions but, as was customary at the time, he wants to fix the extrinsic characteristics of the cities and monuments visited and collect practical notes. The linguistic structures with a descriptive function of the document were examined, precisely to identify the distribution of denotation and connotation and their intertwining in the text. The descriptors are then registered and then considered both on the basis of their logical-syntactic function and on the basis of the semantic mark. The analysis shows that the denotative aspects are more represented, thanks in particular to qualifiers and quantifiers, while the category of evaluators, bearer of subjective impressions, has a very small number of lexemes, but with very high frequency. From the way in which they are used in the text it emerges that the emotional component is entrusted not so much to the lexicon, as one would expect, as to rhetorical strategies of a syntactic type.
