Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The focus of this article is Burkhart Kroeber's German translation (2000) of the second published edition (1840-1842) of the Italian novel "I Promessi Sposi" by Alessandro Manzoni. The aim of the analysis is to highlight some fundamental innovations that the German translator made in his attempt to reproduce the word order or the original sentence structure. In this regard, exemplary text passages are analyzed in which the translation decisions mentioned by Kroeber and tackled by his strategies play an important role from a contrastive linguistic stylistic point of view. Although the analysis categories from well-known translation theories (e.g. Venuti 1998; Bolaños Cuéllar 2002) are in the background of the reflection, Kroeber’s comments, which offer helpful justifications for a text-related investigation, are the main point of reference for the study.
