Abstract
This book chapter is a reconstruction of the most important facts that affected the European Monetary Union since the launch of the common currency until the outbreak of the sovereign debt crisis. Special attention is devoted to the analysis of the evolution of the recent crisis in countries such as Greece, Ireland, Portugal and Italy.
