Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The Roman routes of communication by land and sea, exalted by the Fathers as an instrument for spreading the Gospel, became, especially from the fourth century, the pilgrim routes to the Christian Holy Places. This latter mode of use would also be repeated in medieval Europe, despite the changed environmental conditions. Moreover, in the Orient of Constantinopolitan tradition, it should not be forgotten that the pilgrimage to the holy place has often been configured as a pilgrimage to the place of holiness, that is, as a search for charismatic figures, in monasteries and hermitages, to whose spiritual guidance and intercession to entrust his own soul.
