Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] Modern literature, in particular in the masterpieces, among others, of Manzoni, Camus, Steinbeck taken into consideration in this volume, with the ability to inscribe itself in the conscience that is typical of great fiction, has placed under the eyes and within the mind of the reader the cruel devastation of the ancient and perverse dynamics behind the construction of the scapegoat and sacrificial rites. Especially those who dress persecutory practices with the legitimate and respectable mantle of law and criminal trial. Dynamics that in René Girard found one of his top diagnosticians and of which the book invites you to have a painful but healthy experience, plunging into the darkest abysses of the human soul, not without re-emerging with possible perspectives of justice and cultural and regulatory antidotes suitable for bring to light, contrast or at least contain the formidable thrust in search of victims on whom to deceive unresolved faults and knots by individuals, institutions and communities. In the History of the Infamous Column by Alessandro Manzoni, from which the inspiration for the title of the volume was taken, the scapegoat mechanism finds its only breaking point in the figure of Gasparo Migliavacca who, like Christ in Girard, refuses to expand the sacrificial fury by avoiding further calls of corrality. Without his example - as we read in the book - man would be forced to deny Providence or accuse it, that is, he would find himself bound within a dualism unable to give an answer to the problem of the existence of evil.
