Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] The chapter intends to investigate whether, and to what extent, the Covid-19 emergency will require a change in European policy in the security and defense sectors. In the literature there are three main positions in this regard: the Covid-19 pandemic is seen as a joint of historical significance, a momentary disturbance, or an accelerator of phenomena already underway. Each position then leads to alternative scenarios, within which the European Union (EU) will have to carve out a different role. In light of the initiatives undertaken in the wake of the first wave of the spread of the pandemic, the chapter suggests some considerations regarding which scenario is more likely and what the role of the European Union will be within it.
