Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] One of the main objectives of the New Life project is to demonstrate the effectiveness of reconstitution in producing a soil with excellent agronomic properties. To this end, studies, research and agronomic tests have been conducted, based on the comparison of the results of chemical-physical analyzes and production yields on degraded natural soils and on reconstituted soils produced by these. Experimental comparison plots have been created with different degraded and reconstituted soils - produced by these using also different additional matrices -, and have been studied for 3 years. Chemical and physical analyzes were carried out on soil samples taken from the plots every six months. The purpose of these chemical-physical analyzes and the monitoring of the spontaneous vegetation grown on them was to determine the improvements brought about by the reconstitution to the degraded soils and to identify which were the best matrices to use by calibrating them on the basis of the soil characteristics to be reconstituted. . The best hydrological properties - higher volumetric contents of water with different suctions -, of reconstituted soils compared to degraded natural soils, were determined with Richards plates on both disturbed and undisturbed samples; the humidity at the wilting point was also assessed through a vase test with sunflower seedlings. The data obtained in the laboratory were compared with the outcomes of pedophiles - van Genuchten and Brooks and Corey models. Two agronomic tests with maize have been set up in the open on patches of degraded natural soil and reconstituted soil to evaluate the production yields, decreasing the quantity of irrigation water in one case and nitrogen fertilization in the other in the reconstituted soil. . The tests showed that the corn on reconstituted soil produced with higher yields than the natural soil saving 45% of water and 50% of nitrogen fertilization respectively. For a year, temperature fluctuations were monitored in parcels of degraded natural soil and reconstituted soil. The reconstituted soil throughout the period has maintained more constant temperatures - low day-night temperature range - lower in the summer and higher in the winter than in the natural soil. A pot test was set up to test the suitability of the reconstituted soil for tomato production. This test confirmed the excellent agronomic properties of the reconstituted soil, in which the plants produced, for the same irrigation and fertilizing water, a total average number of double red fruits and the same average total number of green fruits with respect to the pots with degraded natural soil. A greenhouse test was followed to evaluate the speed, the emergency rate and the radical development just a few days after seeding corn seedlings. All the parameters investigated were greater in reconstituted soil plants than in degraded natural soil. The analysis on reconstituted soil of the requirements of the UNI 11235 standard - design and redevelopment of a green area - has led to the conclusion that it is suitable for use for the purpose envisaged by the legislation.
