[Autom. eng. transl.] The consumption of alcoholic drinks is a varied social phenomenon, it is studied by multiple disciplines and scholars of different backgrounds and is analyzed from different points of view, which makes it a very complex phenomenon to analyze and difficult to enclose in mono disciplinary readings. The chapter presents the two visions, not necessarily in contrast, used to understand the phenomenon, the clinical and epidemiological one and what we can call socio-cultural. The state of the art on the issue of alcohol consumption by young adults is illustrated below. This contribution intends to offer a description of the ways in which young Italian adults consume alcohol with particular reference to the risk and protection factors described in the previous paragraph, also trying to frame the phenomenon within the cultural context in which it is inserted. Specifically, the prevalence of risky consumer behavior and alcohol-related problems in the population were investigated according to some demographic characteristics such as gender, age group, as well as factors such as the age of initiation to drink, i.e. age of the first consumption of an alcoholic beverage, the motivations behind drinking and abstaining from it, the perceptions of the social norms of the peer group and society, the adoption of other behaviors at risk to health, such as the consumption of tobacco, cannabinoids and other psychoactive substances. Finally, we proceeded to compare the groups of those who declared that they had implemented binge drinking behaviors in the last month ("drinkers at risk") and those who declared they had not done so ("drinkers not at risk" ). The sample of this study (N = 9,358) is representative of young Italians aged between 18 and 29 years. From the analysis of the data, it emerges that despite the dark image of young Italians that is painted by the media, most of them adopt moderate alcohol consumption behaviors, which do not involve getting drunk or engaging in consumer behavior. large quantities such as binge drinking. Although all of this represents a positive element of the drinking culture in young Italians, it should be emphasized that the thinning of the differences in the adoption of risky alcohol use behavior between males and females is an element of concern.
