Abstract

The essay focuses on the presence of a large amounts of images in Joyce's A Portrait to highlight how Stephen's imagination subjectively re-elaborates external events. It points out the structural and thematic use of images in the novel and the changing pattern of association within Stephen's mind that occur in these particular scenes. This structural and thematic use of images is responsible for the creation in the novel of discourse configurations and the essay has isolated two.
