Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] INTRODUCTION The increase in longevity in European countries represents a great goal and a considerable public health challenge. The research "ProHealth65 +. Health promotion and prevention of risk-action for seniors ", funded by EU-CHAFEA, aims to define effective methods of promoting health in the elderly, analyzing the costs and best practices in Europe to disseminate them among the various stakeholders. The purpose of this work is to present the preliminary results of the review on the state of health and lifestyles of the elderly in the Mediterranean countries, in particular Italy and Portugal. METHODS Within the “ProHealth65 +” project, a first review of literature on Medline was carried out between January and April 2015, using the keywords life styles, active aging, successful aging, health status, chronic disease and mediterranean countries variously combined with the Boolean OR and AND operators. The work to be included had to be in Italian or English and target subjects aged 65 or over. RESULTS The research allowed to find over 2000 articles. A Mediterranean-type diet, characterized by caloric restriction and frequent meals, as well as the number and strength of interpersonal bonds positively influence the aging and health status of the over 65s. Furthermore, some risk factors for chronic diseases, such as smoking , physical activity and high alcohol consumption, show a greater prevalence in the elderly who are not self-sufficient and with worse health conditions. CONCLUSIONS These partial results confirm that active aging involves the promotion of healthy lifestyles and particular attention to the social and cultural aspects that must affect not only older individuals, but also young people in apparent good health. Mediterranean populations seem to be favored in the active aging process.
