Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The process of globalization of the markets and the diversification, also geographical, of the activity of the financial intermediaries have revived the interest for the internationalization of the banking and opened a renewed phase of cross-border operations and penetration in the financial systems of emerging countries and in completely new markets, such as the Chinese or Indian, potentially of considerable importance. Italian banking intermediaries have developed new initiatives to rationalize their foreign distribution network and develop internationalization strategies which, particularly in the case of Eastern Europe, have proved to be very significant. The volume offers a critical analysis of this phenomenon, paying particular attention to: the multidimensionality of international banking, the evaluation of the topicality of the approaches with which the literature has tried to theorize and the critical issues related to the measurement of the degree of internationalization of economic intermediaries ; the operational and geographic areas identified by Italian banks for their international activity and the entry methods in these areas; to the motivations, strategies, modalities and prospects of integration and expansion in some particularly significant geographical areas, with a specific focus on the most striking and massive case of penetration in a foreign economic system, that of Central and Eastern Europe, from part of the three main Italian banking groups; to the related aspects of passive internationalization of the Italian banking system and to the reasons that led the main foreign credit institutions to settle in Italy. The volume, which also makes use of particularly effective and direct investigative tools such as questionnaires and statistical data processing, represents a useful contribution to the study of a phenomenon still in full expansion which, in addition to the community of scholars and operators involved in various title, involves bankers, supervisory authorities and international bodies.
