Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] Reform of the law on citizenship, right to vote for foreigners, access of immigrants to welfare services, legitimacy of dual citizenship: as many themes that animate the political debate of our day, revealing the different "souls" of the concept of citizenship and the need of his rethinking in the immigration society. On the basis of a survey of the studies carried out at the international level, the volume outlines the different "solutions" to escape from the impasse into which the institution of citizenship is placed in a society in which the community of residents no longer coincides with the national community : from the traditional one, based on the naturalization of long-resident foreigners, to that based on the spread of denizen status; from the idea of transnational belonging - which takes shape in the phenomenon of holders of dual citizenship - to that of cosmopolitan or "post-national" citizenship; from the perspective of a supranational citizenship (today exemplified in particular by European citizenship) to that of multicultural citizenship. The unique coexistence of universalism of contents and guarantees of subjective rights, and of particularism expressed by belonging to a specific political group, makes citizenship a central concept for reflection on contemporary society and makes international migration an extraordinarily fruitful phenomenon in contributing to the reconceptualization of the consolidated representations of society, its actors, its laws.
