Abstract

Cinzio Violante (1921-2001), after a period at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan, began his teaching career in Pisa in 1956 with a research programme on the history of the society and institutions of Tuscany and Pisa in particular in the central centuries of the Middle Ages that took up the fundamental lines traced by Gioacchino Volpe. The latter had not pursued them in depth, as he had focused on contemporary history after the First World War.
