Abstract
The essay focuses on the role of religious orders and congregations in the field of education in the Enlightenment and Restoration age, in three important countries of Catholic Europe: France, Spain and Italy. The research highlights the difficulties
experienced by these institutions in the face of jurisdictionalist policies, which aimed to reduce their presence, and to phenomena such as the spread of literacy among the middle classes or the consolidation of pedagogical demands that disrupted the traditional humanistic approach, favoring the professional opportunities for school education. At the same time, we note, albeit with inevitable differences from country to country, a considerable organizational effort, which testifies to the ability to find educational and pastoral strategies in line with the needs of society.
