Research output: Book/ReportBook

Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] Through unpublished sources in Chinese, French, English, Italian, the volume reconstructs for the first time in historical terms the events of Chinese Catholicism from 1949 to 1962 and the positions of the Holy See towards China in the most difficult years of the cold war. After foreign missionaries were expelled, bishops, priests and faithful of Chinese nationality found themselves faced with a political power that forced them to enter "autonomous" structures from external interference and subject to the control of the Chinese Communist Party. The book documents in particular the birth and developments of the Patriotic Association of Chinese Catholics, a unicum in the history of the contemporary Catholic Church still at the center of the contrasts between China and the Vatican.
