Abstract

This paper aims to advance an analysis of the semantic status of the ethnic epithet "crucco" (lit. "kraut") that manages to explain the relationship between the denotation and connotation of such a term. A solution based on the speech-act theory is offered. It is claimed that a speaker, when using an ethnic or racial epithet, performs two different speech-acts, one of which is always an expressive one, according to Searle’s terminology.
