Abstract
The essay addresses the topic of natural disasters from the perspective of private law. The author focuses on the insurance contract. Insurance against damage has as fundamental purpose compensation of losses; nevertheless, with regard to losses caused by natural disasters, and in particular by hydrogeological instability, insurance can also have a preventive function or at least can induce to take measures in order to limit losses.
