Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The construction of fortifications in the Varese area dates back to the moment in which the area was donated to the Milanese episcopate in the 10th century. A second castle was built perhaps at the beginning of the 11th century near the parish church of S. Vittore. Following the dismantling of the latter, the defense of the town was ensured by the continuous curtain wall made up of the walls of the houses and vegetable gardens, surrounded by a moat, along which doors and posterns progressively opened.
