Abstract

Video Capsule Endoscopy (VCE) represents one of the most revolutionary fields in Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. During the last 15years, safety, accuracy and non-invasiveness of VCE led to a widespread availability and application of this diagnostic technology allowing increasingly accurate detection of pathological conditions affecting anatomical bowel regions that had remained unattainable and undetected until capsule became available. The lack of therapeutic options has early represented an important limitation in capsule endoscopy that turned out in the need to develop newer enteroscopic techniques in order to provide histopathological diagnosis and integrate VCE with interventional and therapeutic purposes, limiting surgical approach to selected cases.
