[Autom. eng. transl.] The social doctrine of the Church recognizes the importance and necessity of capital and its complementarity with work. Together, however, it indicates the moral criteria of its justification and its legitimacy: the means of production "cannot be possessed against labor, cannot even be possessed to possess, because the only legitimate title to possess them - and this is in the form of private property, whether in public or collective ownership - is that they serve at work ". This sensitivity towards the human person that leads to affirming the priority of work with respect to capital constitutes the trait that most characterizes the social doctrine of the Church with respect to both the "individualist" vision and the "collectivist" vision.
