Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The article deals with the contemporary Maya theatrical expressiveness of Guatemala. Several scenic representations of pre-Hispanic origin, in particular Rabinal Achí, are still recited today in the indigenous languages, on the ceremonial occasions of the Catholic festivities and the Mayan calendar, providing an important instrument of ethnic affirmation in the context of globalization. However, the crystallization of traditional forms and the proper oral organization of poetic discourse have not prevented deep processes of change, which have facilitated their preservation within the official culture, as a syncretic phenomenon, means of social cohesion, response to aggressions external and offering to the sacred beings of the two cultures.
