[Autom. eng. transl.] The volume translated here was published for the first time in Cologne in 1684 with the title "Breviarium Politicorum secundum Rubricas Mazarinicas". Most scholars dispute the authorship of the work, considering it rather as a compilation of maxims that present in the worst way Mazzarino's way of acting. The book describes the tactical advice useful for those wishing to achieve and maintain success in politics. No political, philosophical or religious idea appears there: the common thread of the "Breviary" is merely psychological, the need for a careful knowledge of the human soul, summarized in the introduction and in the concluding maxims. Precisely because they are not tied to political formulas or to a specific political system, the maxims of the "Breviary" appear to be largely valid in any age, albeit with some exceptions, and it appears perhaps particularly suited to an era like ours in which, the ideologies, politics is often pragmatism and opportunism, in some cases a way to get rich and gain power.
