Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] Touchscreen devices such as tablets and smartphones have changed the forms and timing of internet use, significantly lowering the age of first access. Children access smartphones and tablets to enjoy video content, to play games, or to use apps and educational content. In fact, children under the age of two already have the basic skills to interact with touchscreen technologies (Marsh 2015), which favor the acquisition of digital literacy and emergent literacy - that is, the first phonological and writing. These processes of literacy, according to the socio-cultural approach of the new literacies, are always situated and social. As the first researches show, the differences in terms of use of touchscreen devices as well as parental mediation are also linked to socio-economic and cultural differences. Furthermore, the mediation of the use of digital devices by parents of preschool children is caught between the pervasiveness of restrictive and risk-based regulations and the reduced diffusion of positive models of use practices and skills acquisition. The chapter aims to review the European research on this topic, focusing on the situated and social dimension of (digital and emergent) literacy and on parental dynamics. In this way, the main research questions and theoretical approaches that characterize the European research agenda will be highlighted.
