Abstract

This volume is the first of a series referring to the Italian Historical-Anthropological Mission in Harmuzgan and Makran (Iran and Pakistan), which is taking place since 1982, under the sponsorship of the Italian Ministry for Foreign Affairs and under License granted by the I.R. of Iran and the Federal Government of Pakistan. Ther main object of the research was to verify on the field the descriptions provided by the literary sources in Arabic, Persian and "Western Languages", in order to outline the history of the peopleing of a region so far "terra incognita", which experienced periods of unquestionable splendour. According to our new methodological approach, a vivid image is emerging, allowing us to outline remarkable patterns over so many centuries, whose natural factors may have conditioned history and models of settlement, or being conditioned in their turn. This has also enabled us to cast new light on the British policy in this regions, the aftermath, the interaction between Administration and the Bureaucratic State Apparatus on the one side, and the traditional local political forces on the other, balances and inbalances, and understandings between one or the other local tribal group.
