Abstract

The volume contains the proceedings of a workshop held in 2015 on the theme indicated in the title. The focus is to investigate the ambiguous meaning of the term monarchy in medieval Europe and its developments until the 14th century, when the Monarchia of Dante offers a significant point of arrival to the reflection. Starting from the Imperial Roman conception and through the different translations of the same, in the East as well as in the Roman-barbaric realms, one comes to formulate an idea of new Empire, which also suffers from the reflection of the theologians and the jurists. The revival of the Empire in the West then indicates the fundamental role played by the papacy in this political development.
