Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] Introduction Parenting educational styles constitute the emotional climate in which the child is raised and research suggests the presence of a strong link between authoritative style and adolescent adaptation and well-being (Steinberg, 2000; Panetta et al., 2014). Few studies examine, comparing them, adolescents 'and parents' perceptions and recent works suggest the importance of including more informants (Fok & Shek, 2011) in evaluating the continuity of the educational style and the impact adaptation. This exploratory study aims to evaluate: 1) the link between retrospective and current perception of maternal and paternal authoritative style, evaluated by adolescents, mothers and fathers; 2) the correlation between the perceptions of different informants with respect to such constructs; 3) the impact of authoritative style on the adolescent's personal and family satisfaction. Method 152 adolescents (males = 43.5%; Mid = 15.9; ds = 1.4), 122 mothers (Mid = 46.7; ds = 1.4) and 108 fathers (Mid = 50.5; ds = 5,1) participated in the study by filling in a questionnaire on retrospective perception (Tagliabue et al., 2014) and current (Laghi et al., 2007) of maternal and paternal educational styles; the children also completed a questionnaire on life satisfaction (Zappulla et al., 2014). Results In the first analyzes carried out, 2 models of structural equations were tested for mother-child and father-child dyads, both with acceptable fit indices (mother-child CFI = .97; RMSEA = .11; father-child CFI =. 97; RMSEA = .13). In both dyads the retrospective perception of the authoritative style is associated with the perception of a positive current parenting in the perception of the child and the parent (ob. 1). There is a correlation between the perceptions of the informants with respect to the past and to the present in the mother-child dyad. This correlation is negative in the father-son dyad with regard to retrospective perception. The retrospective perception of the child is positively associated with the paternal perception of a current positive parenting and the paternal retrospective perception is associated with the child's perception of a current positive parenting (ob. 2). Family satisfaction is associated with the child's perception of a positive current parenting in both dyads and Self satisfaction with the paternal perception of a current positive parenting (ob. 3). Conclusions The results of the present study highlight how: 1) in the perception of all the informants there is a continuity in time of the authoritative style; 2) there is an agreement between informants in the mother-child dyad, but not in the father-son dyad, and this disagreement needs further analysis and reflection; 3) the distinction between informants shows different effects on personal or family satisfaction.
