Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] Aloe Arborescens Mill. (aloe) is a plant characterized by various therapeutic properties (eg antimicrobial, healing, anti-inflammatory) and some presuppose intestinal absorption of molecules. Relevant is the systemic anti-inflammatory property which, if proven, could suggest the use of aloe as an alternative to allopathic drugs. To verify the passage of some substances in the blood (eg anthraquinones), a homogenized aloe was given to 4 dairy cows in the medium lactation phase, fed with fodder (every 12 hours) and concentrates (every 3 hours). The cows, monitored continuously for health, food intake, metabolic status and milk production, received 200 ml of rumen-protected aloe and vitamin A (50,000 IU / kg ss ingested), to estimate the transit speed of the fine fractions, 30 minutes before morning fodder. At 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 11 and 24 hours from the assumption of blood samples were taken for the determination of anthraquinones (aloin and aloe-emodin, LC-MS / MS method) and retinol-palmitate (RP; HPLC). The aloe homogenate did not cause any adverse effects to the animals. Plasma RP showed the typical trend of cows in the medium phase of lactation, with a peak at about 11 h and an estimate of the transit speed of 44.8 ± 31.1% / h. Aloin showed a faster absorption than RP: peak after about 4 hours (6.5 ± 6.1 μg / 1) still detectable after 24 hours. In contrast, aloe emodin has never been detected in the blood. The appearance of aloin in plasma following a single administration of the product and its persistence for at least 24 hours suggests metabolic and physiological effects due to the active ingredients of aloe.
