Abstract

Purpose: Ganglia are the most common soft tissue tumours of the wrist. Arthroscopic resection has been developed with the goal of an optimal intra-capsular resection, avoiding the scarring and joint stiffness that have been often described as open surgery complications. Materials and methods: 14 cases of volar ganglia were operated in arthroscopy. The cosmetic results and wrist motion were recorded with a mean F.U. of 18 months. Results: In two cases of STT ganglia the proced ure was converted into open surgery. 11 of 12 patients completely treated by arthroscopy had good results with active motion recovery, absence of scars, no recurrence and no major complications. One patient had a recurrence at 3 months. Conclusions: The arthroscoscopic resection of wrist ganglia has been in our experience effective and safe. It should be considered the gold standard for treatment of volar radiocarpal ganglia for aesthetic, functional and safety reason. Concerning the rare cases of STT ganglia an open approach seems still indicated.
