Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] The "Avanti della Domenica", released between January 1903 and March 1907, was one of the most interesting cultural periodicals of that first decade of the twentieth century that coincided with the Giolittian age and the constitutional left: it was an "Italietta" that the fascists will later recall with disdain, but in reality he was the protagonist of great economic and social achievements, and that he experienced the first authentic increase in the collective well-being. These are the years in which the editorial story of this weekly is registered, which began as a supplement to the socialist newspaper "Avanti!" in direct competition with the bourgeois "Domenica del Corriere"; and, under the guidance of his young and courageous director Vittorio Piva (1875-1907), he came to make himself more and more independent, up to becoming, thanks to graphic, content and stylistic innovations, one of the leading illustrated magazines in Italy at that time . This book, which presents itself as the ideal continuation of the previous volume by Paolo Bolpagni "Art in the" Forward of Sunday "1903-1907", contains an anthology of the best articles that appeared during the five years of the magazine, with particular reference to the themes related to art, and to the relationship between it and the demands of socialism: reviews of exhibitions, critical presentations by sculptors, painters and engravers, texts of aesthetic theory, polemics on facts of cultural life. Authors were writers and journalists of value, like Vittorio Piva himself, Margherita Sarfatti, Giovanni Cena, Edmondo De Amicis, Guelfo Civinini, Diego Garoglio, Goffredo Bellonci, Tomaso Monicelli and even Gabriele d'Annunzio. What emerges is the portrait of an original and combative weekly, a mirror of Italy in those years: a magazine of the socialist area, but independent of the party's cultural directives; not monolithic in the line and in the convictions expressed, but generally aimed at affirming the right to free creativity, without subordination to political or propaganda purposes. Because "the only social character that Art can have", writes Vittorio Piva in May 1905, "is beauty, in all its various aspects". The book is also enriched by a large index apparatus and two in-depth introductory texts (on the editorial history of "Avanti della Domenica" and on the role played by art critics).
